The Pessimal Refrain

(Formerly: Sheer Art Attack -- The Mostly-Fictional Story of an Imaginary Band

Just to change things up in 2021, my BFF, Ben Cannon, and I decided to do a collaborative novel, wherein we tell the humorous story of a fictional band from the tourist trap town of Weaver Bay (thus tangentally tying it as yet another orthoquel to my shared universe of humor novels). The idea is something like a Chuck Klosterman book meets the Beatles Anthology. The story is told first-person from the point-of-view of the two surving members of the band "Maanthaung," an unlikely conglomerate of former "yacht pirates" who shunned a respectable life robbing tourists to become musical artists. In the process, they not only founded the genre of "Fakabilly Swing" (a rock subgenre that is a hodgepodge of 50's do wop, yacht rock, smooth jazz, and Tuvaluan folk music), but also, through a series of unlikely coincidences, cracked the secret code of pop culture and brought about the collapse of the music industry in the late 1980's. Each character is written by one of us, completely in a vacuum. We each have only a general idea of the key points of the story and no real idea what the other person is writing until we compare drafts and somehow merge everything into a contiguous story ... if we can.

Sadly, life got in the way this year, and we fell a bit short of our 50K goals, though he got closer than I did. I was pleased with what I did get however, so since it looks like the collaboration idea fell through, I slapped "Pessimal" moniker on this one and plan to finish it up solo. I did make the lead character a Montana, after all. No reason I can't change a few last names elsewhere.

I'm quite fond of my day job, but if you're in a position to offer me a radio DJ spot with a mid-six-figure salary someplace with palm trees and beaches, or you've got a sexy side project requiring my extensive knowledge of dead programming languages, I'm free for coffee.
